Argon, non-metallic element, element symbol Ar. Argon is a monatomic molecule. Its simple substance is colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. It is one of the most abundant rare gases in the air. Due to its high content in nature, argon is the first rare gas discovered. Chemically inactive, but its compound hydrogen fluoride argon has been prepared. Argon can neither burn nor support combustion. Argon was first used to inflate light bulbs. Large amounts of argon are also used for welding and cutting metals.
